Member $17.95 Within the gloriously diverse rainbow of cultures that make up western New England, the Polish-American community stands strong and proud. This fascinating exploration of the history of Polish immigrants in the Connecticut River Valley is replete with vibrant images of this still thriving community, from its distinctive music and art to its strong faith and traditions. Polish immigrants to the region and their descendants, from dairy farmers to artists to college professors, share their personal stories and the story of how Polish immigrants first came to western Massachusetts. A strong faith in God is central to the Polish community, and the importance of the Catholic church to the first Polish immigrants to America, and the church’s place in the life of present-day Polish-Americans, is examined. Many beautiful Connecticut River Valley cathedrals are visited and the importance of religious holidays is discussed. The Polish heritage is shown to thrive through the arts, from modern day artisans, such as Iconographer Marek Czarnecki, to the traditional folk arts of egg decorating and costume design. The program is the result of a remarkable collaboration between western New England’s public television station, WGBY, and Polish community leaders from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Says Executive Producer Lynn Roginski, “We aim to broaden the common view of the Polish experience beyond polkas and kielbasa, and along the way, inspire others to learn about their own cultural heritage.”
